Sigiriya — Lion Rock & the Cultural Triangle
Sigiriya Rock Fortress is an 8th wonder of the world and one of the true centrepieces of a Sri Lanka trip — a rare jewel among the island's many treasures, famous for its ancient frescoes of wasp-waisted maidens bearing flowers, painted amid wilderness and ruins. Most itineraries build in two nights here, using it as a base for both the rock climb and the wildlife parks nearby.

When to plan your Sigiriya stop
Sigiriya sits inland in the dry zone and is comfortable to visit most of the year, though the Minneriya elephant gathering is at its most dramatic from August to September, which is worth timing a visit around if wildlife is the priority.

Most visitors take around two to three hours round trip, including time at the summit — an early start keeps you ahead of both the heat and the crowds.
The gathering is at its largest during August and September, though jeep safaris run at Minneriya year-round with good chances of sightings.
Usually not — it's more commonly visited on the transfer day between Sigiriya and Kandy, since it sits roughly on that route.
